Covid-19: 14 cases in Johor linked to Sabah trip, says exco member | The Star

JOHOR BARU: A total of 14 Covid-19 positive cases have been detected here among those who had a travel history to Sabah.

State health and environment committee chairman R. Vidyananthan (pic) said that to date, some 1,178 individuals had arrived from Sabah through the Senai International Airport.

“They have all undergone Covid-19 tests.

“The health department will continue to take preventive actions and control the spread of the disease. Screenings are still being actively conducted at all entry points and those coming from Sabah are given pink wristbands,” he said in a statement here on Monday (Oct 5).

He said that as of Sunday (Oct 4), the cumulative number of cases for Covid-19 reported in Johor stood at 785 with 33 active cases, 731 cases discharged and 21 deaths.

“On Sunday, eight new Covid-19 cases were reported with six cases involving those who had a travel history to Sabah.

“Out of the six cases, two cases included a married couple who went for a holiday in Semporna, three went to Sabah for a family visit while one case involved a Sabahan who came to Johor to visit family members living in Johor Baru. The individual was scheduled to return to Sabah on Oct 6,” he said.

He added that the two other individuals who tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday were foreigners who worked in Johor.

“The seventh case was of a cook who works in Johor Baru and has no travel history. We are still investigating the source of infection.

“Meanwhile, the eighth case was of a forklift driver who was detected when the individual underwent screening to travel back to the patient’s home country,” he said, adding that the state Health Department is actively tracing close contacts of the individuals.

Meanwhile, Vidyananthan said a total of 13 close contacts from the Bakawali cluster in Johor tested positive for Covid-19 as of Sunday noon, bringing the total number of cases to 15.

He added that 357 close contacts have been identified to date, with 355 tested negative while two still waiting for results.

The index cases for the cluster are a husband and wife who travelled to Semporna, Sabah, from Sept 13 to 18.
